Police have shot the suspected van driver, Younes Abouyaaqoub, in last Thursday’s Barcelona terrorist attack.

He was killed around 25 miles west of Barcelona near a sewage treatment works. He is believed to have been driving the van that killed 13 people down the Las Ramblas last Thursday.

Police were on the hunt for the suspect that had been extended across Europe. Police closed in on the Subirats area after a tip off. Abouyaaqoub was wearing a fake explosive belt and believed to have shouted “Allahu Akbar” (“God is Greatest”) before he was shot.

Bomb disposal officers examined the belt and confirmed it was fake and then formally identified Abouyaaqoub.
