Tucked away within the confines of the vast La Sella Residential Estate, amongst the slopping hills and luscious greenery of the Denia countryside, set against the picturesque backdrop of the majestic Montgó mountain and the distant glimmering blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, lies the International Centre for Buddhist Studies. The centre, comprising of 32 accommodation and teachings rooms, a 1,000 square metre meditation hall and dining area, is the biggest of its kind in Europe, and one of the religion’s flagship institutions. As such it was formerly opened by His Holiness Sakya Trizin, deputy to the Dalai Lama, and has been visited by many notable Buddhists including American actor Richard Gere.
Managed by the Sakya Foundation, a group dedicated to one of the four schools of Tibetan Buddhism, the centre offers a variety of Buddhist and meditation courses and also hosts a number of spiritual workshops and retreats. In keeping with the Buddhist sense of inclusiveness, the centre, courses and retreats are open to all – Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike.
For those who are simply curious about the centre, Buddhist teachings or looking to improve their well-being through meditation, the Path to Integral Freedom course offers a great insight. Classes cover the basic founding principles of Buddhism and teach simple meditation techniques to help train the mind, relieve stress and reduce negative emotions. While for locals wishing to invigorate their bodies as well as their minds the centre holds Hatha Yoga classes for adults and children every Tuesday evenings.
Or if you’re interested in something more intensive then consider partaking in one of the centre’s spiritual retreats. Disconnect from all the stresses and strains of everyday life and spend a few days meditating and learning more about Buddhist life. This March the centre will host an exclusive 6-day mindfulness retreat, Vipassana, direct by leading Buddhist scholar Alan Wallace.
