Next up on our Alicante Restaurant guide is the Monastrell Restaurant, a place for all good food lovers in the beautiful Alicante. Gaining its Michelin Star in 2013, the restaurant is a must for your taste buds.


“This recognition gave us freedom and the credibility gained encouraged me to open the restaurant in the Port” says María José San Román, chef of the restaurant that alongside with La Taberna del Gourmet, Tribeca and La Vaquería are part of the Gourmet Group.


The one in Alicante Port is the forth branch, representing the “completion of a dream.” Since María José San Román has always been in pursuit of excellence, she wanted to choose the right location for the restaurant; “for this project I employed architects, Lola Alonso and Javier García Solera. I wanted to be respectful to the city architectonics, renovating a historical building, and make it serviceable again.”


The Monastrell venture is 20 years old and emerged from a passion of food and an ambition from Maria, with customers coming from all over the world.


Her objective is to prepare dishes with extra virgin olive oil. She says, “we pursue the olive oil and food pairing.” The star dish is the rice in its different variations, the Arroz a banda being the most popular. The products come from La Albufera area and its oven cooked, with cocochas.


One of the key strengths of the Monastrell is the fish, which monopolizes the menu. The lobster (and lobster rice also), tuna, hake, red shrimps are worth stressing. All the fish dishes come with a garnish of local vegetables, normally with products grown in the south of Alicante province.


The Gourmet Group indulge more than a thousand people every day, and it is without a doubt a guaranteed pleasure for the good food lovers.
