One of the major sports events worldwide has chosen Alicante as Start Port for the fourth time. The Volvo Ocean race takes place every three years, the world tour yacht race that starts in Alicante and will finish in The Hague, Netherlands on the 30th of June 2018.
The route includes stops in Lisbon, Cape Town, Melbourne, Guangzhou (China), Hong Kong, Auckland, Itajaí (Brazil), Newport (U.S.A), Cardiff and Gothenburg.
The Volvo Ocean Race is often described as the longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world, sailing’s toughest team challenge and one of the sport’s Big Three events, alongside the Olympics and the America’s Cup.
The event premises opened on the 11th of October and offers several activities till the 22nd when the race officially starts. The Race Village is located in the harbour and includes all sorts of exhibitions and stands from the main sponsors such as concerts, wind tunnel, playground and nautical activities. The opening, saw a local representation of Moors and Christians and a local music band. You could also visit Salvamento Marítimo (sea rescue) and Open Arms ships.
The competition would be disputed by 7 teams. The Spanish Mapfre team will be the first one to arrive to the premises. Along with it, the Team Brunel (Netherlands); the Turn the tide on plastic team (United Nations); the Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag (Hong Kong); the Vestas (USA/Denmark); the Dong Fen (China) and the AzkoNobel (Netherlands).
