Understanding the prostate; what symptoms could mean and easy to treat solutions

Prostate health issues are common in men, especially those over the age of 50. Here, our medical expert, Dr. Vicente Mera, from the British medical centre in Calpe, Clinica Britannia, explains symptoms that can occur and their simple, effective treatments…

One common issue is the benign prostate enlargement. This simply means that the prostate has grown, which can affect how you pass urine as it puts pressure on the urethra (the tube where the urine passes). Although not usually serious, it can cause pain and difficulties.

The enlargement is believed to be linked to the hormonal changes men go through as they age, and there are now several different ways to treat it.

One of the most modern, and simplest forms of treatment is Green Light laser surgery. This is a minimally invasive treatment which evaporates the tissue blocking the flow of urine from the bladder. It uses the high-power energy from the laser to selectively absorb blood within the prostate tissue, leading to vaporisation and removal of the tissue, that opens the channel.

The laser also seals the blood vessels beneath the area of vaporization which results in less bleeding, compared to the traditional transurethral resections of prostate (TURP). There are also fewer side effects and the recovery time is a lot faster.

At Clinica Britannia, we also offer medical attention for various other prostate or related health issues or surgeries such as: Vasectomy, Lithotripsy for bladder stones, cancer treatments in the surrounding area (prostate/ testicular/ kidney and bladder) as well as bladder procedures for bleeding or infections.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms for benign prostate enlargement, you should seek immediate medical attention. However, if you are experiencing milder symptoms, you may also be able to make few lifestyle changes to help, such as; drinking less alcohol, caffeine, fizzy drinks as well as limiting intake of artificial sweeteners and exercising more, but you should still have regular prostate check-ups.
