New tourism record-high for Spain

Spain’s has broken its tourism record, with the number of visitors to the country has increased 12 percent in the first six months of the year.

Every year for the last four years Spain’s tourist numbers have increased, which may be due to other competitive European countries suffering from economic and security issues.

36.3 million tourists visited Spain between January and June 2017, reported the National Statistics Institute. A large portion of those visitors came from Britain; 8.6 million, which is an increase of 9.1 percent compared to last year. Germans were the second most popular tourists in Spain, making up 5.5 million, an increase of 10 percent.

Last year an apparent 75.3 million tourists in total came to Spain.

Tourism represents an important part of the Spanish economy, reaching 11 percent of Spain’s gross domestic product, currently at 1.2 trillion euros.
