Is Blepharoplasty Right for Me? Dr Solesio Gives Us All The Keys

Over the years, the skin loses its natural ability to stay hydrated and regenerate collagen. This causes flaccidity and sagging to appear in many areas. Of these, one of the most striking is undoubtedly the eye area. To improve the appearance of the eyes and reverse the sad or tired appearance that the passing of the years gives us, there are surgeries such as blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery. Do you want to know if you are a good candidate for blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty: what does it consist of?

Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of fat as well as excess skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. When eyelid surgery focuses on the mobile eyelids, we call it upper blepharoplasty. If we focus on the part of the bags or the immobile eyelid, we speak of lower blepharoplasty. If the surgical procedure is performed on both, the intervention is considered a complete blepharoplasty.

Depending on which procedure is necessary, the surgeon will make incisions, generally in the natural lines of the upper eyelids and below the lash line in the lower eyelids. Through these incisions, he or she will separate skin, fat and muscle, removing excess tissue as necessary to give the patient a more harmonious and youthful appearance. The procedure usually lasts between one and three hours, and may take slightly longer if combined with other surgeries, such as a brow lift or facelift. Whether blepharoplasty is performed under local or general anaesthesia depends on this.

Is Blepharoplasty right for me?

Generally, the ideal candidate for blepharoplasty is a patient, both male and female, from the age of 35 (although due to genetic antecedents, drooping eyelids or bags may appear earlier). Optimal candidates for blepharoplasty are those with moderate sagging of the tissues surrounding the eye due to age or gravity. Also those who have bags under the lower eyelid and are looking for an improved appearance can undergo blepharoplasty.

Eyelid surgery has striking, definitive and very satisfying results. By means of a relatively simple procedure, aesthetic complexes and functional needs can be solved. Its main advantages are:

It can improve the field of vision, as the drooping of the eyelids sometimes causes a decrease in people’s visual capacity due to occlusion.
Decrease the bags under the eyes, by emptying these fat deposits that cause so much damage to the appearance and self-esteem of patients.
Rapid recovery, with no need for hospitalization and very small, almost invisible scars.
The results are definitive and, as a general rule, the bags never reappear and it takes many years before a certain drooping of the eyelids can be noticed again.

What scar will blepharoplasty leave?

Blepharoplasty leaves very small and inconspicuous scars. In most cases, the incisions are made in the natural folds and lines of the skin surrounding the eye, thus concealing them. In other cases, where the approach is transconjunctival, the incision is placed inside the eyelid, leaving no scar visible.

It is perfectly normal for the resulting scars to have a pinkish appearance for the first few weeks and/or months, gradually turning into an almost imperceptible light-colored line.

After surgery, an ophthalmic ointment and cold dressings will be applied to reduce swelling and discomfort. Swelling and bruising are likely to persist but will gradually disappear over a few days. The sutures will be removed after a week and you will be able to return to work around 2 to 3 weeks after the procedure. Although the visible results of blepharoplasty are immediate, the definitive results can be seen around the third or fourth month.

Other complications that may appear are some difficulty in adjusting your vision, which also disappears progressively; or conjunctivitis, which is controlled without problems with the treatment indicated by your surgeon.
