How to Stay Safe in Spain’s Record-Breaking Heatwave

Spain Faces Extreme Summer Heat
Spain is experiencing one of its hottest summers in history. June 2025 broke temperature records, with inland areas like Huelva reaching up to 46 °C. Sea temperatures along the Mediterranean have risen to 30 °C, a worrying trend that’s expected to continue into July. Red alerts have been issued across eleven regions, including Andalusia, Valencia and Murcia. The national weather agency, AEMET, is urging everyone to take precautions, especially along the coast and in major tourist zones.

Keep Hydrated Throughout the Day
Water intake is vital during high heat. Health experts recommend drinking small amounts of water regularly. Waiting until you feel thirsty can already be too late. Fresh fruits, hydration sachets, and avoiding dehydrating drinks like alcohol and coffee can help the body stay balanced.

Avoid Peak Heat Hours
Between 12 PM and 5 PM, it’s safer to stay indoors or in shaded areas. Whether in Madrid, Seville, Valencia or Alicante, the sun at midday is intense. People are advised to plan outings early in the morning or later in the evening. Lightweight clothing, hats, and sunglasses can offer some protection when outdoors is unavoidable.

Sun Protection Saves Lives
Using high-SPF sunscreen is essential every day, even when it’s cloudy. Sunburn reduces the skin’s ability to cool the body and can lead to more serious health issues. Aloe-based after-sun products can soothe the skin after long exposure. Shade, umbrellas, and breathable clothing remain your best friends this summer.

Know the Warning Signs
Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are real risks. Dizziness, nausea, dry skin, and confusion are signs of overheating. If someone shows symptoms, move them to a cooler place, give them water, and seek medical attention. Quick action can prevent serious illness.

Stay Informed and Be Prepared
Local governments across Spain are offering advice and opening cooling centres in cities and towns. Pharmacies are stocked with hydration aids and sun care essentials. Keep track of AEMET updates and follow guidelines from local authorities.
